Do I really need to replace my CV joint?

I took my car in for new tires and brakes as it needed them both badly. The brakes made a clicking noise before repair, but now they feel great and are quiet. While in the shop (the same one I've gone to for many years that have always been honest) the mechanic told me that my CV joints were starting to split and that I should have them replaced soon. He said it will cost around $300. Do I need to replace them although there are no symptoms? If I don't could I end up stranded on the side of the road or worse yet in accident?

Hello,

If the CV shaft has visible wear and has torn boot. Then it is a good idea to get them replaced. Many times if the repair does not get performed in a timely manner it can lead to bigger issues.
If you drive on worn CV axle it can start making noise when you turn and if you let it go long enough it can even break off.

Here is couple of helpful articles:

I have attached diagrams for your reference.

Please let me know of any questions.

Thank you.
