I paid a guy to remove my key from my ignition. It won't turn off and release my key.

He said the ignition was fine, it might be the interlock cable.

How do I confirm the real problem without putting the key back in the ignition and risk it getting stuck again.

The shifter/interlock system confirming the vehicle is fully in Park. If the ignition cylinder itself is okay, the common causes are:

1. Shifter not fully reaching the Park position internally
2. Shift interlock cable out of adjustment or damaged
3. Shifter assembly problem
4. Park switch / BTSI circuit issue
5. Ignition lock housing/key release mechanism issue
6. First, do not force the key

If the key will not rotate fully to LOCK/OFF, forcing it can damage the lock cylinder or ignition housing. I sounds like the lock was damaged in the repair or not reassembled correctly or the shift cable for the transmission is worn out and needs to be replaced. When you shift the transmission into park does it feel solid or is it mushy and not positive? If so this can be the original problem and the key was okay to begin with. You might want to try adjusting the cable. Check out the images (below). Let me know how it goes
