Had to remove ignition lock cylinder the guts inside steering column are stuck in on position so its always trying to turn over. So I took ignition switch off and can start it by turning switch with screw driver but it won't stay running. I don't want to sink a lot off money into it its a real beater but need it for a few more weeks. Any ideas?

Hi,

Here are the directions for replacing the lock cylinder. The attached pics correlate with the directions. Also, you will need to complete the reset procedure at the end, otherwise the system will lock down.

REVISED LOCK CYLINDER REPLACEMENT

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Disable the supplemental inflatable restraints (SIR) system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in Air Bags and Seat Belts.
3. Remove the steering column shrouds. Refer to Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement - On Vehicle.

Pic 1

4. Turn the ignition lock cylinder (1) to the RUN position.

Pic 2

5. Push the locking button (2) on the rear of the housing assembly (1).
6. Remove the ignition lock cylinder by pulling outward from the steering column.

Pic 3

7. Disconnect the electrical connector (3) from the ignition lock cylinder (1).

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

pic 4

1. Connect the electrical connector (3) to the ignition lock cylinder (1).

Pic 5

2. Insert the ignition lock cylinder into the housing assembly (1) while rotating the key approximately 5 degrees counter - clockwise.
3. Install the steering column shrouds. Refer to Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement - On Vehicle.
4. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in Air Bags and Seat Belts.
5. Connect the negative battery cable.

IMPORTANT: Due to component variability, the vehicle theft deterrent (VTD) system must have the learn procedure performed regardless, even if the vehicle starts on the first ignition cycle after a VTD repair. All codes in the theft deterrent module must be cleared for a relearn.

If you replace the ignition lock cylinder, the system will enter the long tamper mode. If the system enters the long tamper mode, ensure that the system completes a long tamper mode cycle. During the long tamper mode cycle, the THEFT indicator will flash for the full 10 minutes. The instrument cluster and the PCM require the full 10 minutes in order to complete the learn cycle. Ensure that the ignition switch remains in RUN until the indicator stops flashing. If you turn the ignition switch before the indicator stops flashing, ensure that you repeat the long tamper cycle from the beginning.

Ignition lock cylinder is already removed the guts inside steering column are all messed up can't put new lock cylinder in. So I took ignition switch off the other side of steering column and can start it by turning it with a screw driver my problem is it won't run more than a second can I reset the the computer using the ignition switch itself.

That would be because the PATS system is activating due to the sensor in the key cylinder housing not operating. There is no reset for that other than to replace the damaged housing in the column and install the key cylinder then reset the system with a scan tool and relearn the new sensor.
