The first time it did it I was re attaching the battery terminals. As I was tightening the negative terminal it started to crank over and actually started. I had the keys in my pocket. The reason I was working on the battery was because it drains out every 3 or 4 day's. I put my meter on it and it show's a drain, when the car is off. Sometimes when I try to start it it makes some weird noises and then starts to try to start on it's own, but fails and waits for a few seconds then tries to start again even with the key off or out. Most of the time it acts like a normal car and starts right up. But the problem seems to be getting worse. Any ideas? My friend who is a mechanic said he's never seen such a thing. I've been told everything from starter relay to ignition switch.

Hi,

For this to happen with the key out, there has to be a short to power in the wire to the S terminal on the starter

On the starter, you will find a heavy gauge wire from the battery and a smaller gauge wire. The smaller one will be purple. That wire should only get 12v when the key is in the start position. Check that it isn't anywhere near the heavy gauge wire on the starter or able to move and touch the larger wire.

If that looks good, follow the purple wire and check for anywhere it could be damaged.

I attached the wiring schematic for the starter. I had to cut the pic in half to make it readable, but I did overlap them so you could follow them.

Here is a link you may find helpful:

Let me know what you find. Also, let me know if the starter relay has been replaced.

Take care,
Joe

Once again you nailed it Joe. I got under there and the wires to the starter were dirty and 1 was loose, and 2 others were right on top of each other. So it was easy to see how the could be shorting out. So I cleaned them up and put them back on and the starter problem is gone. Now I just need to see if the battery holds up now.

Hi,

I'm glad to hear you found the problem. I had a feeling it would be something like that.

Feel free to come back anytime in the future. You're always welcome here.

Take care,

Joe
