idle problems

2006 FORD ESCAPE

it idles like its going to shut off and when in reverse it acts like it wants to shut off and sometimes it does and sounds like it is backfiring.

Even though ours was a 3.0, yours has a 2.3L not 2.0L correct?

Same kind of idle system as our 2003 (different part numbers).

Maybe a little love tap might make a "change" while it is acting up, thus verifying where the problem really is.
