transmission not selecting

whenever i shift in drive it does not select. whenever i press on the gas pedal car does not move.

is the selector on the transmission moving to correct position when moving the gear shifter? is there any loading up of the transmission when in gear? can you check for line pressure and if oil level is very low, or smells burnt and is very dark in color?
