My speedo is on the frits its hit an miss and then it will bounds up an down is it machcanical or elec. And what do I do?

It is ran by vehicle speed sensor which is attached to tranny and is driven by small gears. Since its bouncing around that is a sign of one or more teeth missing from the small gears of tranny or broken teeth on sensor.
