2005 Hyundai Accent

I have a 2005 Hyundai Accent with 25K miles. The gear shift button will not push in so I can change gears. What could cause this?

One of two things. It could be the sensor switch on the brake pedal that tells it the brake is applied or it could be the solenoid that releases the shift lever. One of those is bad.
