2000 Other Hyundai Models Engine Size unknown Two Wheel Drive Manual 60000 miles

I HAVE A HORRIBLE RATTLING NOISE COMING FROM THE TOP OF THE ENGINE, ITS A DOUBLE OVER HEAD CAM, 16 VALVE. I TOOK THE COVER OFF AND NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A LOT OF SLACK ON THE CHAIN THATS THERE. COULD THAT BE THE CAUSE OF THE NOISE, IF SO COULD YOU PLEASE ADVISE ME ON WHAT TO DO, MY CAR IS AN HYUNDAI COUPE SE 1.6. MANY THANKS

Yes the noise could be coming from the chain. You will basically need to remove everything from the front of the engine to get to the chain. For me to attempt to explain if via the Internet allows too much room for error. Therefore, I recommend purchasing a good repair manual that provides step by step instructions and pictures to identify parts. Chances are it is a tensioner problem if the chain isn't broken, but the only way to be sure is to take it apart.
