I am currently wondering how to replace this part as there are no Hayes manuals around.

The solenoid on the starter has probably got a burned contact. I have repaired them by making a part but I would say the best step is to replace the starter. When a manual says to removed the battery connections, do it. Especially when you are working with the Hondas. So, take the battery cables off of the battery. Remove the connections from the starter, take out the two or three bolts that retain the starter and pull it out. Your choice to get a new, used or rebuilt starter. The last thing you do is hook up the battery and I would hook up the ground last. Good luck
