Hi I was driving at high speed with the MAF sensor exposed to open air(no filter) on sealed road and reving high between 3rd and 4th gear for about 35 miles. The engine ran perfect all the way home but later when I went to go again the motor would barely start. I also ran without sensor pluged in for 5 days prior with no obvious difference to fuel consumption. It now Idles rough, backfires but runs well at high revs. Head is not blown, new leads, sparkplugs and motor was running great. Has the high air flow damaged the MAF sensor?

I would make sure there is no dirt that got onto the MAF. If it can't read inlet correctly, it will cause problems. Also, you should have the air tube and box connected for it to work properly and extend engine life.

Has the check engine light come on?
