2003 Hyundai Elantra 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 180 K miles

I recently damaged the speed sensor in the right front hub assembly (not ABS) while changing bearings, struts and ball joints. There was no symptom for a day, then the check engine light came on. I know this is obviously the cause.

I am sure it is for something important or hyundai would not have put it and a tone wheel in the system.

What the heck does this sensor do? And is it dealer only? The parts places I tried have never heard of it and have no listing for it.

Thanks

Hi Northboy,

Thank you for the donation.

If you are referring to the sensing part in the bearing then there are 2 possibilities.

1. The bearing has been installed incorrectly. The bearing has an inbuilt sensor part and if you installed the bearing inside out, the sensor would not work. The part that has to be installed outside, ie on wheel side should have a rubber seal as cover whereas the inner side would only have a metal cover for the bearing.

2. The wrong part has been used. The part used is not equipped with the sensor.

This sensor is for sensing wheel movement during emergency braking and activates the ABS. Without it, the ABS indicator light would be showing and this would cancell the ABS functions.

Hope I have understood your question correctly.

It is NOT an ABS sensor. The car does not have ABS. Also the bearing is installed just fine. It is a speed sensor that reads from a tone wheel on the Right Front wheel Jackshaft only, not any of the other wheels the car does not have ABS.

I destroyed the switch while attempting to remove it to remove the knuckle/hub assembly to press out the bearing, so I know this why I am getting the check engine light.

There is another speed sensor on the trans for the speedometer/ ABS (both of which still still work)

Can you please provide the DTC for the CEL?

Apart from the wheel and speed sensors, I could not find any other sensors. The DTC would help me find the correct data and parts malfunctioning.
