i went to get my car check cause it need a smog check they did a quick check because my check engine light was on. they told me that my catalytic converter needed to be replace with a new one. how could i know if thats true and it that expensive to do.

If thats the case the your car'scomputer has a catalyst effeciency code stored right? This means the 02 sensor behind the converter is switching too much. So it's either a bad sensor or a bad converter. The cost can vary wideley depending on if a direct fit, Hyundai part, or a universal converter is used. But I would ball park the job ar 600.00.
