The check engine light comes on after it seems to shift gears roughly. The light stays on until we shut the engine off. When we start the car again the light is off. Transmission fluid is okay. We took it into a repair shop with the check engine light off and they could not diagnose the problem. This does not happen everytime we drive the car.

Hi there, Thank you for the donation,

You will have a set fault code in the ECU, you need to get a diagnostic scan done to read this code and any other unresolved fault codes, ensure the mechanic has an up to date scanner of high quality or they will not be able to extract all the codes.

Does the check engine light have to be on in order for them to read it? I would take it to a Hyundai dealer but the closest one is 78 miles away. My mechanic says that often Hyundai doesn't provide the necessary information for him to read it. Should I try another mechanic?

Hi there, The light does not have to be on to read any set code, it is just a matter of extraction the code it will be a P**** type code, I would get a new mechanic on the job, this is not at all hard to do.

Took car to a new mechanic and he just called and said it was two speed sensors, one for the input and one for the output and he'll also change the transmission fluid. The speed sensors are 60 and 80 dollars and the bill will be close to 300. Does this sound niormal? Thanks for your help!
