When I tried to start my car today, it turned over, then I heard a small popping or banging noise, and the engine died. Is this a dead battery , that popping sound has me concerned.

Might be fuel problem When you turn key to On do you hear the fuel pump for a few secs? If so check the fuel pressure make sure its within specs. and comeback with the readings.

The battery has done its job by causing the starter to engage the engine.
