When I put gas into my car the pump always sputters as if the tank were full. What could be the problem?

There is a breather that runs along side of the filler tube. It allows air to exit the tank when you fill it. If it is plugged or damaged, the air can't escape the tank; thus the fuel can't enter. Check it for damage or being plugged.
