1996 Hyundai Accent Manual

Hi

I'm from Europe and I just find your website.Can you please help me with the problem that I have?
I have 1996 Hyundai LS model and I don't even run it,because the fuel consumption is enormous.
According to the specs,it should spend about 5 Litres on 100km.It was everything OK until I took it to the first servicing.I don't know what did mechanic do,but after that it started spending about 8/9 litres and then because of that I took it back again and after that the fuel consumption is even higher.About 13 litres now !!!!
I took it to a Hyundai official mechanics and they couldn't do anything to repair it and make fuel consumption normal.......Because of that I rarely even drive the car.
Can you please please help me,what should I do,should I change the carburetor or what? What is the problem?

Many things can cause higher fuel consumption. For example, a clogged catalytic converter, a dirty air filter, in need of a tune up, a bad oxygen sensor... and the list goes on. Has the check engine light ever come on? (also, what part of Europe are you from?) My father moved here from Italy in the 1950's.

So what do you think I should check first? I really don't know what kind of engine light you are talking about!There is no light for engine I think,only for oil.
About your question,I'm from Macedonia (in the BALKANS).We were part of Former Yugoslavia :)

Interesting, my wife's family was originally from Yugoslavia. Regardless, it does have a check engine light that will come on if there is a sensor problem or electrical problem with the engine. Since it isn't on, start by checking basic things such as the air filter (make sure it is clean), make sure there are no vacuum leaks, and let me know what you find.

I checked the air filter and it is clean.What else exactly should I check now?

If the air filter is clean and the engine has no vacuum leaks, the only other thing I can ask is when was the last tune up?

The mechanics tuned up the engine 2-3 years ago,but they didn't make any improvements (maybe they even made it worse).Since then,no one is has touched the car and no one is driving the car.From time to time,we just start the engine for a while,so that it won't get rusty or something.
What do you think about carburator?Maybe the mechanics did something wrong to it?
Or something else is the problem?

It is fuel injected, so it doesn't have a carb. My one last concern is if the vehicle isn't run too often. Many times it will foul plugs from starting it for a short time and then turning it off. When the engine starts cold, it requires more fuel to run. After turning it on and off often and not really driving it, that can cause the plugs to get weak. The more you drive a car the better it will run.

Obviously we have missunderstanding here.My HUYNDAI ACCENT has carburator.Probably European models are different then US models and maybe that is why there is no light for the engine like you said...........!!!

That is interesting. In the US, we haven't seen a car with a carb since the late 80's.
