In my car, the Protege 5, the air conditioner will only work in fan positions one and four. I am not real concerned with that as the cooler weather is coming and I can live without air conditioning for now. What does concern of is that the temperature control knob does not seem to be properly adjusting the temperature. Could these issues be related? And whether or not they are, how can I fix this issue for cheap? As I am on a really tight, nearly nonexistent budget.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

sounds like your resistor is shot and only letting the two work. use a test light to probe different wires at resistor to confirm it is not the switch. it is behind right side of dash.
