I'm smelling other people's exhaust in fresh air mode. not so in recirculate but recirculate automatically returns to fresh in all positions beyond 2/3 forward vent 1/3 floor. I'd like to force recirculate in all modes. i understand the rationale behind Chevy's decision to do this. i just entirely disagree with the notion that i am incapable of cracking the windows when the cabin needs new/fresh air. and i do not like breathing noxious fumes because Chevy insists on it. I'm open to any/all possible solutions. Thank you and be well.

Yep, you can try unplugging the actuator in the recirculate mode or we will need to rig the blend door actuator, so it does not move the internal blend door. Here is the location of the actuator in question. You may be able to just lay the actuator off to the side and force something into the blend door to have it stay in the recirculate position. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.
