Just wait until the engine has completely cooled down unplug the sensor. Then get the new sensor ready to install it. Then unscrew the new sensor and quickly swap over the new sensor before you lose a lot of coolant. Also, just because the fan does not work does not mean it is the sensor it could be the fan motor etc. Here are diagrams to help you find the location for replacement. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.
Your vehicle's Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT) is located on the back of the engine near the thermostat. In the diagrams down below I have included a diagram of the ECT. Please get back to us with how everything turns out.

Hello,
the engine coolant sensor is located at the top front of the engine near the distributor. Here is a guide that will show you what you are in for when doing the job.
My temperature gauge has been fluctuating and I believe the temperature sending unit may be bad.

Image #2 Taurus 3.0 SHO sensors locations, by the throttle body.
Image #3 Taurus 3.8 sensors locations, at the top left rear of the engine.
Thank you. It was the 3.8 by the way. I had kept thinking that was it, but for some reason it didn't look the same as the one I ordered. Thanks again.
