I just purchased a used 2011 Toyota Prius with 127000 miles and a push start system. Unfortunately, it only came with one FOB. I noticed on ebay, that you can purchase your own key and DIY the programming. Here's a link to the item: https://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-2010-2011-2012-2013-2014-2015-2016-TOYOTA-PRIUS-REMOTE-KEY-FOB-SMART-PROX/352425821312?

I was just wondering if someone could share instructions as to how to DIY this project? Thanks in advance!

Hi,

This really isn't a DIY on this vehicle. To make things even more difficult, there was a change to the frequency used (AM or FM) based on production date. If you look through this technical service bulletin, it describes how to add one or two new fobs and update the system. However, it requires specific tooling. The attached pics correlate with the directions. Note that this indicates a fob that is inoperative. I realize that isn't the case, but the procedure for reprogramming is relevant.

I wish I had an easy answer, but this is the procedure:

Applicability

Introduction

Some 2011 4Runner, Prius, and Venza vehicles may exhibit a condition where the Smart Key system is inoperative when another vehicle's Smart key is in or near the vehicle. Condition may affect Smart access, wireless remote operation, and Smart start. Combination meter multi-information display may show the message: "Key not detected" when attempting to start vehicle and when driving. Follow the procedures outlined in this bulletin to address this condition.

Required Tools & Equipment

Repair Procedure

1. Install updated Door Control Receiver using the appropriate links below. Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS), applicable model and model year Repair Manual:

2011 Prius:
Vehicle Interior-Door Lock - 'Door Control Receiver: Removal / Installation"

2. Program Smart Key system using "3-step procedure" listed below.

NOTE

Identify FCC ID codes on original and new Smart Key fob plastic cases. Key fobs with FCC ID ending in "B" identifies original AM keys. Do NOT mix original AM keys and new FM keys. Keep them in separate locations.

D. Close Smart Code Registration utility to complete step 1.

E. Remove all original AM keys from your work area. They are no longer needed.

2. Erase - This step erases all original AM key codes but retains the new FM key programming.

A. Enter Smart Code Erasure utility.

B. Authorize erasing of AM keys by placing new programmed FM key on start button for one beep.

C. Close Smart Code Erasure utility to complete step 2.

3. Add - This step programs the second new FM key to complete the set of two new keys.

A. Enter Smart Code Registration utility for adding keys.

B. Authorize addition of key by placing first new programmed FM key on start button for one beep.

C. Add second new FM key by placing above start button for first beep and on seat for second beep.

D. Close Smart Code Registration utility to complete step 3.

Repair Completion

When repair is completed verify all Smart and wireless functions including power back door operation (if applicable). Final programmed keys should include 2 regular Smart Key fobs. None of the final programmed keys should have an FCC ID ending with the letters "AB".

Appreciate it! Most of that definitely went over my head. The local locksmith will do it for $75.00. For the 2004-2009 Prius, there are tons of DIY videos on YouTube, but for whatever reason, the GEN 3 is only capable of unlock with locksmith or dealer. Either that, or folks have decided not to share on YouTube as yet. Anyway, thanks much!
