We know how to remove the actual socket but do we need to break the bulb or change the entire assembly?

Looks like it takes a 168 peanut bulb. The assembly comes out and uses 1/4 turn locking to secure the socket to the lens. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

The back door interior panels are held in with special clips. To disengage these clips you must first purchase a clip remover. Then simply disengage the clips to remove the panels. Then remove the back door pull strap and trim board assembly. Remove teh sub-assembly outside panel and then you can remove teh license plate lamp assembly. Do this by releasing the 2 claw fittings and disconnecting the license plate lamp assembly.
