I started getting a hot electrical smell. It seems to be coming from passenger side rear. I can see no smoke. I just cannot locate where it is coming from. Any suggestions?

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.com.

That is a tough one because there are so many different possibilities. If the smell is coming from in the vehicle, remove door panels to confirm there is nothing shorting with the power windows, door lock assembly. If the smell is noticeable both inside and out, remove the tail light assembly and inspect wiring. Also, the battery is located under the rear passenger seat. Remove the seat and confirm there are no melted or damaged wiring.

When you remove these components for inspection, pay close attention for the smell you mentioned. Often times, electrical components will have or create a residual smell which can help locate the problem.

The attached picture shows where the battery is physically located. If you find you need to check for power, check wiring. Here are links that show how it is done:

Since the battery is in the vehicle, make sure the alternator is not over charging. Here is a link that shows how to check an alternator:

Make sure the battery terminals are clean and tight. A loose connection can cause arcing which can cause wiring to get hotter than they should.

I hope something here helps. I have to be honest. Take your time an make sure you find the issue. If it is something you cannot locate on your own, you may need to have it checked professionally. Overheated electrical components can cause a fire.

Let me know if you have questions, need additional help, or if you need more information.

Take care,
Joe
