Hi! Hope you are doing good whoever is reading this, haha.
So, anytime I try to accelerate from 1st to 3rd gear (it's a 5s automatic but you can still notice when it makes the shifts) I can't rev above 3,000 RPMs because it makes a sound like if you were scraping two pieces of metal together.
So, I'll just rev it to 2,500 RPMs until I know I'm in fourth gear because then I can push it past 3,000 RPMs without it making a sound.
But that makes for really slow driving. I mean it's nice to cruise around but sometimes you need to go past 3,000 RPMs at low gears, and it always sounds awful!

Hope you guys can help me out with this one.

Hi,

That is a tough one, but I'll try my best. Can you tell approximately where the sound comes from? Also, could you record it and upload it for me to hear?

If you feel it could be transmission-related, have you checked the fluid level and condition?

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-and-add-transmission-fluid

Let me know.

Hi, thanks for the prompt reply!

I got the transmission oil changed when I got the car and the mechanic didn't tell me anything so I thought it was okay, but I'll check that today (although I do feel it could be the clutch). Also, I'll try to find some help to figure exactly where the sound comes from and hopefully make a video of it.

I'll update you in a couple hours.

I appreciate the help!

I checked the transmission oil, and it was good and taking the video I could realize the sound was more from the back, so that's a relief maybe it's the muffler but what do you think?

Hi,

What I'm hearing in the video is a backfire which is likely caused by an exhaust leak. I have a feeling you are correct. I watched the video a couple of times and each time I saw a spot on the corner of the muffler that appeared rusted. It is a split second that I get to see it and can't stop the video fast enough. LOL Check to see if you notice it. It's about 2/3 of the way through your video.

Let me know.

Hi, I couldn't see any visible holes in the muffler, but I did notice some pretty nasty welding with corrosion I don't know if there might be some tiny holes in it. Also, I knew the car was in an accident back in 2014 and someone had "fix it", but taking these pictures now I know it was probably rear ended, hahaha. Look at the hole in my rear chassis.

Hi,

Is the last pic you attached part of the frame? If so, that should be welded.

As far as the exhaust is concerned, I copied one of your pics and circled two places I need you to check. They appear to be holes. Also, inspect the exhaust all the way to the engine. There could be an issue at any point causing this.

Let me know.

Take care,

Joe

Hi Joe!

Yes, it's part of the frame, I want to remove the plastic panels so I have more room to look at the damage because I could see lots of rust in the trunk area, but yes, that needs welding.

When I was taking the photos I did saw them but I'll have to test them, I'm thinking with soapy water or dust to see if there's an actual "leak", I'm planning on taking the car next week to a shop so it easier to watch beneath the car, since I want to fix it myself, I mean if I need help I'll get help but that's plan B haha.

Thanks! I'll keep you updated.

Hi,

If there is a leak there, you will likely feel the exhaust coming from it.

Regardless, let me know how things turn out for you. I'm interested in knowing.

Take care of yourself,

Joe

Hi Joe, sorry it's been so long!

I took the car to the shop and in fact the muffler it's no longer working but guess what Haha someone already cut away both catalytic converters (is that considered a straight pipe?) So, also that's why it was louder than usual, anyways I'm changing the muffler this weekend and I'll be sharing a video of the new sound hopefully that's all it needed.

Thanks for the support!

Take care.

Hi,

That is very possible. Note that if the catalytic converters have been removed, that ca cause different drivability issues.

Regardless, thank you for the update. I'm anxious to see the video.

Take care,

Joe

Hi Joe!

Interesting, like which drivability issues? If I may ask

Yeah I'm also anxious to see the result, haha.

Have a nice day!

Hi,

Without the converters, the oxygen sensors are likely (if they are still installed) won't get the correct readings and turn the check engine light on.

If you have questions, let me know.

Hi, I do have my engine light on but since it has its history, I didn't think much of it. I'll buy a reader in the future to see what pops up. Is there something I can do about the oxygen readings? Do I have to tune my car?

Hi,

There really isn't anything that can be done without the sensors installed. If you haven't already, take it to a parts store and ask them to scan it for you. Most will do it free of charge. I'm interested in knowing what codes are stored.

Let me know.

Hi Joe,

Finally, I was able to take the car to the shop, I have attached some videos with the before and after, now it sounds so good!

I'll take the care to a parts store to check the codes soon enough, haha.

I also attached a photo where the converter was removed.

Cheers!

Hi Joe, thanks for everything!

I'll be sure to come back if something pops up and I need help with it, haha.

I checked the codes with the scanner and as you said there were only two codes both about the catalytic converters, I genuinely thought it was going to have lots more so that's great! Haha

Take care Joe!

Warm regards.
