my son is buying a used cylinder head, does he need to replace all the gasgets or just the main one?

I would say that depends on the condition of the head and along with that how long it may have been sitting dry and not used. I am assuming that you would replace the intake and exhaust gaskets as well as the head gasket. I would also do the valve cover gasket which includes the seals for the plug holes as well. Better off to do it right now. Get in, get out and stay out.
