Noises problem
1985 Honda Prelude 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual

IT STARTED TO RUN LOUSY AND DEVELOPED A NOISE WHICH SOUNDS LIKE IT'S COMING FROM ONE OF THE PULLYS ON THE BELT. I REPLACED THE ALTERNATOR BECAUSE IT WAS HAVING STARTING PROBLEMS. IT STARTS FINE NOW BUT IDLES LOW AND SOMETIMES DIES AT STOP LIGHTS.I GAVE IT A TUNEUP APROX 5000 HWY MILES AGO. IT RAN LIKE A TOP BEFORE. I DO REMEMBER THAT THE IDLE WHEN IT WAS COLD USE TO REV HIGHER BEFORE THIS ALL STARTED, THEN THE KNOCKING SOUND STARTED. I'VE BEEN TOLD CAT CONVERTER, FUEL FILTER, OR TUNE IT UP AGAIN. I DON'T WANT TO THROW POINTLESS MONEY AT IT CHANGING PARTS OR PAYING A SHOP TO DO THE SAME. ANY IDEAS?

Hi LUMBERPUNK,

Check the cold start valve and clean the throttle body and idle adjust screw with carb cleaner, should solve the idling problem

Knocking noise from the pulley area, check and see if the crankshaft main pulley is running in a wavy pattern, if yes the pulley damper is detached, you need to replace the pulley.
