I found out that my rear left axle seal is bad for some reason. I need to replace it and while I do I should just do the brakes while I'm at it. I need some instruction on how to do this. Any help would be great! Thanks

Hi lbhans04,

This is not an easy job for DIY.

AXLE SHAFT & BEARING
Removal (Dana Axle)

1 . Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheels. Remove brake drum or brake caliper and
rotor. On disc brake vehicles, support caliper with wire. Remove seal retainer nuts from axle
housing. See Fig. 2 .

2 . Pull axle shaft from axle housing. Remove snap ring and bearing race from axle shaft. Cut or chisel off bearing retainer. Break bearing cage using hammer and chisel and remove cage and rollers.

3 . Remove oil seal, seal retainer and parking brake assembly. Using a hydraulic press and bearing splitter, press inner race from axle shaft. Inspect axle shaft for spalling or grooves from seal wear. Ensure shaft is not bent.

Installation

1 . Install parking brake assembly, seal retainer and seal. Ensure parts are in proper direction. Place bearing on axle with outer race toward inboard side of shaft. Press bearing onto axle shaft.

2 . Press retainer onto axle shaft. Install snap ring. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Top off fluid level.

Removal (Saginaw Axle)
1 . Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheels. Remove brake drum or caliper and rotor, if equipped. Support caliper with wire. Clean dirt from differential cover. Place pan under cover. Drain lubricant by removing cover.

2 . Remove pinion shaft lock bolt and pinion shaft. See Fig. 1 . Push axle shaft inward. Remove "C" clip from end of axle shaft. Pull out axle shaft. Pry oil seal from housing. Using a slide hammer and bearing puller, remove bearing.

Installation
1 . Lubricate bearing. Using Bearing Driver (J-23765), drive bearing in axle housing until bottoming against shoulder. Tap NEW seal into housing using seal installer. Coat seal lip with axle lubricant.

2 . Insert axle shaft into axle housing carefully to avoid damage to oil seal. Install "C" clip on end of axle shaft. Pull axle shaft outward so "C" clip seats in side gear counterbore.

3 . Insert pinion shaft through cage and pinion gears. Align hole in pinion shaft with lock bolt hole. Install NEW lock bolt. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
