Rear Hatch Struts

I have a 2005 Honda Odyssey and my rear tailgate doesn't stay up. I can buy the parts, but can't figure out how to remove the old parts so that I can put the new ones on.

39k miles; weather just turned extremely hot.
Any connection with the weather and the problem?

Parts are on order as well but not sure how best to replace them.

Any help is appreciated.
