Hi
My wife drives a 2002 Honda Odyssey and started complaining that the gear shifter would slide between gears, so I test drove it. She is correct - the Odyssey almost effortlessly slides between gears, like something is stripped or worn. It stays in gear, it's just WAYYY too easy to shift (no brake or effort required to shift). If I drive it slow enough, I can shift it from Drive to Reverse.. while I'm moving! Not cool! The auto trans seems to shift and act fine - it's the gear shifter that seems worn.
I adjusted the shifter cable (as per Haynes manual instructions), but it didn't help. One thing I did notice, when I disconnected the shift cable & pushed it all the way in, I pulled it back two clicks (to get to Neutral). I felt it click from P to Reverse, but I could hardly tell when it went from Reverse to Neutral. Make sense? Any ideas of what it might be or where to look?
tks for the HEP!

Hi Dave, I believe the detent spring inside the shift lever assy is loose or worn. Hope the diagrams is helpful.

Hi

Tks for the hep.
I replaced the detent spring, the gear shifter lever assembly, and the plastic washer/gasket that goes on the shifter assy. The problem still remains, it's way too easy to shift, any ideas what to check next?
tks!

If the gear lever has excessive free hwen any gear is engaged, then you need to check if any of the cushions are worn or missing.

Disconnect the gear shift cable and manually pull and push it. If it is too easy without any feelings of the cable locking at each individual position, then the problem is fom the transmission side. That would be a problem as the locking detent for the transmission is internal.
