After my car had been running for about 5 minutes this morning, my battery light flashed on briefly, followed by a squealing noise from the right side of the engine, which lasted only a few seconds. Is that noise from the serpentine belt?

Sounds like it. If the belt slips, the alternator wont put out anything, resulting in a battery light. Inspect the tensioner to be sure it is holding the correct tension on the drive belt as well as the belt its self.
