This car has a lot of miles but has been well maintained. It recently started revving up for no reason, usually when I'm at a Stop sign, but once while I was driving and the car surged forward. The engine light has started coming on as soon as the revving begins.

In the past, the only time the engine light ever came on was when I needed a new oxygen sensor. I had a new one installed, but it hasn't helped the problem. I love this car dearly. Can you help?

It also seems to be idling really high right after I start the engine.

First thing you need to do is have the codes read, Autozone does it free, Post the results with the code number(s). Even if the service engine light is not on, there should be freeze frame data stored.
