Car was running poorly so I installed new plugs, distributor cap, rotor, plug wires, gas filters (2). Car continued to run poorly, start hard and load up--major gas smell. It would develop a miss at approximately 3200 rpm in high gear. I took it to a mechanic that was recommended to me and he stated the compression was low but would build up the more you cranked the engine. He did a valve job on the car, replaced the timing belt and put a new float in the carb. The car starts good now but still starts to load-up and miss at about 3000 rpm and seems to want to foul the plugs. When I got home with the car and shut it down, there was again a major gas fume odor. I'm beginning to doubt it needed a valve job and don't want to take it back to this guy as he had the car for six weeks.
