I recently noticed that I m loosing/using coolant. The coolant level keeps going down but I don't see any leaks. Is there a test where the dealer can determine if I have a head gasket leak or what the problem is? If it is a blown head gasket, what causes that? Something I'm doing wrong?

Hi HarryRCT,

If it is a blown gasket, you would be losing a lot of coolant and the reserve (recovery) tank would be full with radiator side getting dry.

If the reserve tank is drying up as well, there is a leakage in the system.

If the leaking is not bad, you would not notice anything. Often small leakages are due to hose joints hardening and leaking.

Look for signs of stains from dried up coolants and you would be able to know which part is leaking.

A pressure test uses a pressure metered pump installed onto the radiator cap mount. When pressure drops, it means there is a leak and the pressurised leak would show by the coolants leaking out.

Blown head gasket are due to overheating caused by insufficient coolant in system. It should not be anything that you did wrong unless you neglect to monitor the coolant level regularly. No doubt it does not require much maintenence, too much coolant losses would cause overheating and engine damage.

Thanks for the speedy, understandable advice. I've made an appointment at the dealer for a pressure test.
