I just replaced the timing belt and water pump .I start the car and it wont idle but 1000 rpm and above the car runs fine . I think the timing is out . How do I fix this problem. Did I not set the camshaft correctly .Or can I fix this by messing with the distributor.

sounds like your a tooth or two off. did you pin the cams ? if it's twin cam there are holes in cam-caps b-hind cam pulleys. put punch of similar diameter in the holes so the cams don't move. make sure you are on the "white mark" on crank pulley for " t.d.c.". re- check these align marks & reset if needed
