I have been told that I need a new drive shaft and damper installed on my 1998 Honday CRV. Estimates have run $1200-$1500. I really don't have the $ or want to put that much $ into an 11 year old car. It shakes pretty good these days. I cannot find a used drive shaft anywhere close to where I live. I'm wondering if there is something that can be done besides having the whole thing replaced and if I do not have it repair, what are the consequences?

Unfortunately you have to replace it. The shaft could eventually break and fall off the vehicle, causing the vehicle to be stranded and not being able to drive.
