Acceleration & Idle of Honda Civic

I am a 20 year old poor college student. I have a 2000 Honda Civic, 97,600 miles, 4 cyl, automatic, that I took to have some preventative maintenance done. I had the timing belt and water pump replaced, CV joint replaced, and oxygen sensor replaced. When I got it back from the mechanic it started out driving fine and then got very quiet, seemed to go into neutral. After a few seconds it would go into the next gear and drive fine. Took it back, nothing showed on the computer, changed the transmission fluid. But the mechanic could not recreate the problem. Took it to a Honda dealer, they went over everything that the mechanic did, adjusted timing slightly, and did an injection cleaning. They also could not recreate the problem. Should I get rid of the car, is my transmission failing? I'm at a loss.

Not quite following the problem statement but understand the repairs that were made. Can you tell me more or it this what you are referring to? The car drove fine but then seemed to go in to gear but eventually did and the car took off?

What I meant was that when I start out driving (basically when it's cold), it starts out fine in the lowest drive gear, (automatic transmission) then it feels like it is slips into neutral (kicks out of gear--sort of like free-wheeling) for a few seconds before changing into the 2nd range. After that it normally drives fine for the rest of my trip. It just seems to not want to change between the lowest and 2nd range.
Hope this helps. Maybe you can help me.
