If the transmission fluid level is correct, the transmission is failing.

Get a scan done to check if there are any trouble codes recorded.

Engine just revs too high when the car is in drive and the transmission is fine. Could the cars timing be out of whack. The engine revs higher than usual when it's been driven. The rpm's are usually around almost 2 1/2 to 3 and I feel as if i'm racing someone while driving this car when i'm not as that is what the engine sounds like while the car is in drive.

Sorry, I am having difficulty understanding your explanation of the problem.

Can you rephrase it?

When I am driving this car on city streets at around 60 kms / hr the cars engine makes it sound as if i'm driving on the highway at twice the speed and consuming twice the amount of gasoline. The rpm's on the dash display show an indication of around 2 1/2 to 3 and stay there for the time that the car is in drive which is too way too high. There is no indication of a check engine light on the dashes display at all. Could the engines timing be what is the problem as it needs to be adjusted to solve this problem.

This should not be a fault with the engine timing. More likely the transmisison is slipping or not up-shifting.

Get a scan done to retrieve for trouble codes though the CEL might not be indicating.

Did you check the transmission fluid level?

The idling speed is too high and it could be due to vacuum leakage or a faulty idle control solenoid. Have these checked.
