My car is running perfectly fine. The manual says to replace the timing belt at 110,000. I checked with my mechanic and he also says it should probably be replaced at 110,000 and gave me an estimate of $480 to replace it. Is it really a neccesary preventative maintence I should do or would it not hurt anything to keep going on it, and if it does start to wear or brake, then get it fixed?

The timing belt should never be neglected. If it breaks under operation, it will allow the valves to hit the pistons and bend them. This would be a very hefty repair bill compared to simply replacing the timing belt as preventative maintenance.
