2004 Honda Civic 103, 00 miles

2004 honda civic coupe 103000 miles. I was driving to work this morning (approx 50 miles) and noticed the heater was not working all the time. When the air from the heater became cold the engine temp. Would go up. Then the engine temp would slowly return to normal and the heater would work again. This happened several times.
Any ideas?

The 2 most common causes of the sysptoms you describe are; 1- coolant low. 2- cylinder compression leaking into the cooling system due to a failing head gasket or a cracked cylinder head. The Compression entering the cooling creates air pockets which lodge in the heater, hence, no water-no heat. Have you noticed any coolant loss or white smoke out the exhaust recently? Also, excessive bubbles in the coolant? Please advise.
