2003 Honda Civic malfunction indicator lamp

lamp went on yesterday. Looked in manual to check on a fix. Tried what they said about loose gas cap. took it off and tightened it and then drove it a few miles and still the light stayed on. It also says emissions control systems could have a problem. Is this something I can fix just being a novice? Thanks,
