So prior to this summer my ac wasnt working for about 3 years. i had it looked at and the compressor was dead. this year i had a tech replace the compressor. he said there was something else he was gonna replace that usually gets done with the compressor though i dont remember what it was. it worked ok, but it seemed to be short-cycling on the highway and putting massive strain on the engine (it ended up killing my already declining tranny and the tech who replaced the tranny mentioned the term short cycling to me). anyways I ended up having the whole system flushed and filled cause the output was only 70% and i believe the tech who replaced the compressor only drained and filled it, didnt flush out the 3 yr old fluid.

so where i am at now is that the short cycling is drastically improved, but when i turn on the ac after the car has been sitting a long time (more so in the heat) you can hear the compressor come on out the window, but the cold air doesnt blow right away. sometimes it takes 10 - 20 minutes to get the cold air. I mean the cold air is really cold it just takes soooo long to get that point from when i turn the compressor on till the time it comes out the vents. what do you think i need to do to make the cold air blow almost instantly?

Hi churchykid85,

Thank you for the donation.

During initial starting of the A/C, does the compressor short cycles during this period? If yes, the time delay for the system to cool lies in this problem.

For the compressor to short cycle, possible causes are :

1. Excessive freon in system.
2. Faulty pressure switch.
3. Compressor clutch excessive clearance.
4. Weak compressor clutch coil.
5. Faulty PCM.
6. Compressor running hot.
7. Engine overheating.

Go through above and see if you can come up with anything.

ok. well updating the information a little bit, when i first turn the ac on, the compressor does not short cycle. it only short cycles on the highway, starts around 3000rpm (thats with the blower fan on high). if i turn the blower fan to halfway it seems to stop short cycling.

secondly, there is a slight (i can only best describe it as a chirpping sound) that comes from compressor area when the car is stopped and then when i start to go it gets a lil louder and faster only for a second until its gone. that doesnt really seem like itd cause the problem but id just thought id throw it in there.

i assume the ac tech used the correct amount of freon and the PCM is ok.
as far as the clutch and clutch coil, id have to check them out.
i havent had any problems with overheating tho the compressor may be running hot.

Get the low and high pressure readings so that we can understand if the freon level is correct.

The chirping noise could mean the compressor clutch is not engaging tightly or the beltings could be dry.
