HOW CAN YOU TELL IF THE DISTRIBUTOR IS BAD?THAT SEEMS TO BE THE ADVICE I HAVE RECEIVED,THAT I SHOULD TRY REPLACING THE DISTRIBUTOR.

The distributor can be tsted. Check the ignition coil resistance and power supplt to it.

The sensors can be tested as well
