1999 Honda Civic heater smell

I have a '99 Honda Civic with about 159,213 miles. When I turn the heat on there is smell that I can only describe as something that smells like an everything bagel. Sometimes it still comes out when I turn the heat off and the air cirrulation button is not on. I can't stand the smell. What is it?

The origin of the smell is caused by fungus, bacteria and other microbes growing inside the evaporator core. The moisture-laden environment is very conducive to the growth of these organisms.

There's a product called Clean 'N Coat. It is a two-part chemical that embeds an antibacterial in an acrylic coating that sticks to the evaporator. It comes in a spray can that you can spray on the evaporator and offers protection for about three years.
