1998 Honda Civic overeheating

Hi I was told that I would spend about a grand ($1000.00) on replacing a head gasket. Is that true. My har as overheated 2 times. I dont knwo much aobut cars but I do knwo that its not supposed to go past the middle wich tells you that ur car is warm and ready to drive. Please help :(

Hi babylove024b2,

Yes, it is rather costly to replace a head gasket due to overheating. The cylinder would have to be refaced as well.

If the temperature is only over the halfway mark, it is getting hot but not yet overheating.

Did you check the coolant level in the radiator?
If level is low, there couls be a laeak somewhere and that would cause the overheating.

Are the cooling fans working?
