Engine Cooling problem
1998 Honda Civic 4 cyl All Wheel Drive

My daughters car overheated - she pulled into an Autozone and one of the guys looked at it and said her reservoir was dry - she needed some coolant - so she bought some and filled it up - 3 days later her car overheated again - this time seriously and quickly.

She pulled into a service station where they told her it was a radiator leak because her tank was dry again they added water and she drove the couple of block home - however - when I drove the car - it was that night and it was very cool and rainy - I didn't have anything on to pull on the engine other than the wipers. I drove at a steady speed of about 30 mph - it took a moment for the engine to warm up and then it went from being cool to midrange fairly quickly - then it went to very high - even quicker - ( never went into the red zone but came a hair off of it) but when I slowed down or stopped at a light it would drop somewhat - I didn't go very far - we have someone who will put in the radiator for her, but, how do we know that is what it is and that it isn't a thermostat or a water pump issue?

Hi lblomstrom,

When there are coolant leakages, insufficient coolant in system would cause overheating and such happenings can cause damage to the engine parts such as thermostat, head gasket, water pump etc.

You would need to rectify the leakages before test driving and diagnosing overheating.
