1997 Honda Civic My gear shift

Often my gear shift will need to be forced into third gear. My solution to this is to bypass third and go to fourth but, this slows down my acceleration. What could the problem be and how can I fix it.

You need a transmission rebuild. The synchro is most likely the culprit.
