I have a 1997 Honda Civic with 173,000 miles. It has recently started making a cyclical knocking sound when applying the brakes. It is most noticeable in a hard or sudden stop. I believe that the noise is coming from the rear of the vehicle.

Do you think it might be the brakes, wheel bearings or something else?

yes, its funny. I have that going on right now. first thing to check is your drums or calipers(not sure what u have on that vehicle in the rear). then the shoes or pads. they could be cracked or maybe need some resurfacing but they must be inspected.

I'm pretty sure it has drums on the rear. I'm going to take a closer look this weekend.

Thanks for the fast response!
