Before I drop big buck into a new air bag are there any checks I can preform to see why the srs light keeps coming on

Yes,

Go to a parts store and get a few scan of the SRS system. Figure out which code it is, and diagnose that circuit.

The Auto stores around here only will do Check engine lights, not srs warning checks
