1996 Honda Civic 220k miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
I went through a huge puddle in a rain storm.
The engine was stalling.
I took the car to a garage to have it checked and dry out.
I was told that the dist cap , rotor button, cables would all have to be replaced.
Mistake #1- I didn't get the work done then.
The engine had a higher pitch whine to it than it had previously.
A week later the car would not start at all. I had it towed to a commercial garage.
The alternator had seized up. The battery was completely dead.
These were repaired and/ or replaced. They did replace the cables.
However, these people told me that the dist cap and button were fine.
Now the problem is that the car idles at about 1600 rpm, then jumps down to 800, back up to 1600 ,back down to 800. If I turn the A/C on, this idle jumping stops; the car will then idle at 800-1000 with the AC on.
The engine light is still on.
The engine still has the higher whining pitch sound to it.
What is the cause of this higher pitched sound?
What would cause the strange idle reving?
Should I have the dist cap etc changed?
What should I do with the car now? I still like the car and have no inclination to get a new one. Other than this problem ( which I created ) the car has been fine.
and does anyone else see anything that needs further investigation.
