I recently purchased 94 Honda civic EX. The previous owner "Honda Mechanic" recently installed a used engine from Japan. The car runs great BUT.The upper radiator hosed split on day two, on day five the upper heater hose sprung a pinhole leak. both leaks are at the top end. I worry that there is a hidden cause or do you belive he used cheap hoses during the installation? The car runs cool and has not over heated as we caught both leaks "dumb luck".
Thanks for any help.

I would say that the hoses were never replaced, i would be replacing all coolant hoses as a precaution, you do not want to cook the engine.
